Question 1

What is Call for Line?

Accepted Answer

Call for Line is a line rehearsal app for actors. Upload any script, assign yourself a role, and rehearse with a virtual scene partner that reads every other part aloud. The app scores your accuracy word by word so you know exactly where you stand.

Question 2

How does Call for Line work?

Accepted Answer

Import a script (PDF or plain text), and the app parses it into scenes, characters, and lines. Choose your character, pick a scene, and start rehearsing. Your scene partner reads the other roles aloud while you say your lines. After each run, you get a scored breakdown showing which words you hit and which you missed.

Question 3

What script formats does Call for Line support?

Accepted Answer

Upload a PDF or plain text file and Call for Line detects the format automatically. It handles any script, stage or screen: stage plays, screenplays, TV scripts, musicals, radio plays, audition sides.

Question 4

Is Call for Line free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there is a real free plan: 2 script imports and 20 scored rehearsals each month, plus The Stacks, a built-in library of 31 classic plays that never counts against your imports. Call for Line Pro removes the limits for $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and new subscribers get seven days free. The free plan stays either way, and it never expires.

Question 5

What happens when I hit the free plan's monthly limit?

Accepted Answer

You can't import another script or score another rehearsal until the first of the month. Everything already in your library still works, The Stacks stays open, and Study mode is never metered. Pro lifts both limits if you would rather not wait.

Question 6

What are the rehearsal modes?

Accepted Answer

Two modes. Standard mode runs the full scene with your scene partner reading every other role. Study mode uses a flashcard interface where you tap to flip between the cue line and your response.

Question 7

Can I rehearse without an internet connection?

Accepted Answer

Scripts you've already imported are stored on your device. You can review your lines in study mode offline. Voice playback and scoring require a connection.

Question 8

How does accuracy scoring work?

Accepted Answer

After each rehearsal, Call for Line compares your spoken words to the script text word by word. The results screen highlights differences in color – words you missed, added, or changed are all marked. You can set your accuracy goal anywhere from 50% to 100% in 5% steps and retry only the lines you missed. If the microphone misheard you, one tap on Word Perfect grants the line full credit.

Question 9

Can I rehearse with my real scene partner's voice?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Recorded Voices lets you replace the built-in voices with recordings of a real person. Record their lines one at a time, batch-record a whole scene in Studio mode, or upload an existing recording and the app aligns it to the script line by line.

Question 10

How does Call for Line know when I'm off book?

Accepted Answer

The app tracks a mastery score for every scene, weighted toward your recent runs. When your last three rehearsals of a scene all meet your accuracy goal, the scene is marked Off Book. You also get score history, streaks, and a list of trouble lines.

Question 11

What voices are available for the scene partner?

Accepted Answer

Six distinct voices are available for your scene partner. The app gives each character its own voice, so you can tell who is speaking without looking at the screen. You can also adjust playback speed from 0.75x to 2.0x.

Question 12

Can I use Call for Line for audition prep?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Upload your audition sides, assign your role, and rehearse with scored feedback.

Question 13

What is The Stacks?

Accepted Answer

The Stacks is Call for Line's built-in library of 31 classic plays from Shakespeare, Chekhov, Wilde, Ibsen, Shaw, Moliere, and more. Every play is public domain, verified, and ready to rehearse – no upload needed.

Question 14

How is Call for Line different from other line memorization apps?

Accepted Answer

Most line memorization apps show you the script and let you hide the text to check yourself. In Call for Line you say the lines out loud: your scene partner reads every other role aloud, and the app scores each word you speak against the script. The score tells you which lines you know cold and which ones you only recognize.

Question 15

Does Call for Line work for film and TV actors, not just stage?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Call for Line supports screenplays and TV scripts in addition to stage plays. Upload a PDF of your sides, assign your character, and rehearse your scenes. The accuracy scoring and scene partner features work the same way regardless of format.

Question 16

What does "off book" mean?

Accepted Answer

"Off book" means an actor has memorized their lines and no longer needs the script during rehearsal. It's a milestone every production works toward.

Question 17

What is a cold read?

Accepted Answer

A cold read is performing material you haven't had time to prepare. It's common in auditions, where you receive sides minutes before going in. The skill is making unfamiliar text sound natural.

Question 18

How do I memorize lines faster?

Accepted Answer

Break the script into beats, understand your character's intention behind each line, and use spaced repetition rather than marathon sessions. Running lines with a partner lets your body learn the rhythm of the scene.

Question 19

What is a monologue vs. a soliloquy?

Accepted Answer

A monologue is an extended speech by one character, usually addressed to other characters on stage. A soliloquy is spoken directly to the audience (or to oneself) when the character is alone or aside from the action.

Question 20

What does "call for line" mean in theatre?

Accepted Answer

When an actor forgets a line during rehearsal, they say "line" (or "call for line"), and the stage manager reads the next few words from the script to get them back on track. It's a standard part of the rehearsal process.

Question 21

What is blocking in theatre?

Accepted Answer

Blocking is the choreography of movement on stage – where actors stand, when they cross, which direction they face. It's set during early rehearsals and shapes how the audience reads the scene.

Question 22

What is a table read?

Accepted Answer

A table read (or read-through) is when the full cast sits down and reads the script aloud together, usually on the first day of rehearsal. It gives everyone a sense of the whole story before blocking begins.

Question 23

How do actors memorize long speeches?

Accepted Answer

Most actors break long speeches into thought units – groups of lines that share a single intention or idea. Memorize each unit separately, then chain them together. Understanding why your character says each thing matters more than rote repetition.

Question 24

What is a sides audition?

Accepted Answer

Sides are short excerpts from a script, typically one to three pages, given to actors before or at an audition. A "sides audition" means you'll be reading from these excerpts rather than performing a prepared monologue.

Question 25

How many times should you rehearse before a show?

Accepted Answer

There's no universal number, but most actors find that running a scene five to seven times with the script, then five to seven more without it, gets them off book. Space the sessions out instead of cramming them together: short daily rehearsals beat one long marathon.
